Retired Climbing Rope Exploration
Climbing Rope is very commonly found in Vancouver and Squamish due to the world class climbing areas in Squamish. If you’re a consistent climber going every weekend, you’re supposed to retire your rope after 3 years of use which leads to an enormous amount of rope being tossed every year. This is why I chose to conduct material exploration and testing on retired climbing rope with the goal of giving it a second life after retirement.
People often weave old ropes into mats, convert lengths of rope into dog leashes, and even make art with its intricate and colorful weaves but I wanted to harness the ropes abrasive resistant properties as well as its dynamicity to implement it into comfortable, durable and stylish work wear and rock-climbing clothing.
